Background of the study
School libraries are foundational to academic achievement and play an essential role in fostering community engagement. In Gwagwalada Area Council, these libraries have evolved from mere repositories of books to vibrant centers that facilitate interactive learning and community participation. Through programs such as reading clubs, storytelling sessions, and collaborative projects, school libraries actively engage students, teachers, and community members alike (Chinwe, 2023). The emphasis on community engagement in school libraries reflects a broader educational strategy to promote literacy, cultural awareness, and civic responsibility. In this setting, the library becomes a platform for dialogue between the educational institution and the local community, thereby encouraging mutual support and shared learning experiences (Nnamdi, 2024). Additionally, modern school libraries have integrated digital resources and online platforms to enhance their outreach, thereby ensuring that even marginalized groups have access to valuable educational materials. Nonetheless, challenges such as limited resources, inadequate training for librarians, and infrastructural deficits persist, which can hinder effective community engagement (Onyekachi, 2023). This study examines how school libraries in Gwagwalada Area Council contribute to community engagement and the ways in which these efforts can be optimized to foster a more inclusive and participatory learning environment (Uche, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized potential of school libraries to foster community engagement, many institutions in Gwagwalada face significant challenges in actualizing this role. Inadequate resources, limited awareness of library services among community members, and infrastructural constraints hinder the effective engagement of local stakeholders. Consequently, the intended benefits of increased literacy and community cohesion remain partially unrealized. This study seeks to investigate these challenges and provide recommendations to enhance the engagement efforts of school libraries in the FCT (Ebere, 2023).
